Toothbrushes are not meant to last forever, but how do you know when it’s time to swap them out? Knowing when to replace it is essential to keep your smile bright and healthy. Even though it can be hard to tell when it’s time for a change, there are certain guidelines you can follow and signs to look out for that can alert you. That said, here’s how often you should change your toothbrush and what happens if you don’t replace it within the recommended time frame.

How Often Should You Change Out Your Toothbrush?

You must change your toothbrush regularly to get the most out of your brushing sessions. Here’s how often you should be replacing your beloved bristles:

  • Every three to four months. According to manufacturer guidelines and dentist recommendations, you should get a new toothbrush every three to four months. On average, that’s how long it’ll take for your bristles to become worn out if you’re brushing at least twice a day like you’re supposed to.
  • When the bristles become worn-down and frayed. No matter how long you’ve had your toothbrush, you should change it out as soon as the bristles fall out, appear splayed, or become worn out.
  • After an illness. Have you recently overcome an illness? Toss out your toothbrush right away to prevent reinfection, especially if you had any type of virus.

What Happens If You Don’t Replace It Regularly?

If you continue to use your toothbrush even after the recommended timeframe, the bristles will start to warp into a new shape, become frayed, and lose their cleaning capability. Since old toothbrushes can’t remove plaque as effectively, using one can increase your risk of tooth decay, cavities, or even gum disease. Of course, that’s because soft, straight bristles work best to eliminate plaque and bacteria from your mouth.

Toothbrush-Care Tips

Here are some ways you can keep your toothbrush in optimal condition in between replacements:

  • Make sure everyone in your household gets their own toothbrush to lower the risk of infection
  • Rinse your toothbrush with hot water after each use to remove toothpaste, food particles, bacteria, and plaque
  • Store your toothbrush far away from contaminants in an upright position so it can air dry as necessary
  • Do not store your toothbrush in a closed container as it can encourage mold growth or spread bacteria. Allow it to dry completely before putting it in a confined space!

Changing your toothbrush as recommended is extremely important for your oral health. It will help you maintain a beautiful, healthy smile for years to come!
